Filtering Structural Modes in Aircraft: Notch Filters Vs Kalman Filters
نویسندگان
چکیده
The disturbances to an airframe’s sensors caused by the flexibility of the airframe is called structural coupling. Notch filters are currently used to attenuate the effect that the structural modes have on the aircraft’s inertial flight control sensors. However, this approach is becoming more problematic with modern combat aircraft. A complex model which is representative of an agile combat aircraft has been developed, and a Kalman filter has been designed to reduce the effects of structural coupling. This work forms part of an ongoing project in conjunction with BAE Systems. Copyright © 2005 IFAC

Reducing Structural Coupling on a Flexible Beam Using Kalman Filters
Structural coupling is the disturbance to the aircraft’s inertial sensors caused by the flexibility in the airframe, and is particularly problematic for modern combat aircraft. The current solution uses a series of notch filters to remove the structural frequencies, but these introduce significant phase delays into the control loop. This paper presents some experimental and theoretical results ...
متن کاملSuppression of the Aeroelastic/Aeroservoelastic Interaction Using Adaptive Feedback Control Instead of Notching Filters
This paper investigates the possibility that an adaptive feedback controller can be designed and implemented for the suppression of aircraft’s structural vibration in the presence of any aeroelastic/aeroservoelastic interaction, instead of using the non-adaptive notching filters. Currently aircraft with non-adaptive control laws usually include roll-off or notch filters to avoid AE/ASE interact...
متن کاملConnections between H2 optimal filters and unknown input observers – Performance limitations of H2 optimal filtering
This paper establishes a connection between the unknown input observer problem (also known as the exact input-decoupling filtering problem) and the Kalman filtering problem. Such a connection leads to a better understanding of filtering. As a consequence of this, tools for the analysis as well as synthesis of filters can be developed. Moreover, such tools can be utilized to establish performanc...
متن کاملMathematical strategies for filtering complex systems: Regularly spaced sparse observations
Real time filtering of noisy turbulent signals through sparse observations on a regularly spaced mesh is a notoriously difficult and important prototype filtering problem. Simpler off-line test criteria are proposed here as guidelines for filter performance for these stiff multi-scale filtering problems in the context of linear stochastic partial differential equations with turbulent solutions....
متن کاملParallel Kalman Filtering on the Connection Machine
A parallel algorithm for square root Kalman filtering is developed and implemented on the Connection Machine (CM). The algorithm makes efficient use of parallel prefix or scan operations which are primitive instructions in the CM. Performance measurements show that the CM filter runs in time linear in the state vector size. This represents a great improvement over serial implementations which r...
